The O’Reilly View: “Muslims Killed Us On 9/11”

Bill O’Reilly of Fox News fame apparently just can’t help himself. Appearing on ABC’s program The View, O’Reilly (well-known for his loud spouting of overbearing rhetoric), managed to rant his way into an embarrassingly bigoted statement. He also insulted and alienated co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar to the point of them walking off the set. The topic was the mosque near Ground Zero. O’Reilly’s take was that it was inappropriate for the families who lost loved ones because, “Muslims killed us on 9/11.”

A description of the event from an excellent article in the LA Times:

If you wanted to know what’s wrong with American politics, all you had to do was watch “The View” on Thursday, when co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar walked off the set after Fox News commentator Bill O’Reilly announced that “Muslims killed us on 9/11.”  In the wake of their departure, co-host Barbara Walters, who is becoming more schoolmarmish with every passing year, admonished her colleagues, telling the audience, “You have just seen what should never happen,” and adding that “we” should be able to sit down and talk calmly about politics even if we disagree.

Girlfriend, please.

While I appreciate Barbara Walter’s feeble and misguided attempt at keeping the peace, in an effort to do so she lost a lot of credibility. O’Reilly is not a humble philosopher. He’s an aggressive instigator; a hate-filled bomb waiting for the opportunity to detonate. Much like the Rev. Terry Jones fiasco, Walters and company provided O’Reilly a soapbox in the name of ratings. You can hardly blame the fallout when you’re the one who lit the fuse.

O’Reilly did later clarify his statement, inserting the word “extremists” into his argument, however, he still failed to explain how or why the mosque near Ground Zero is inappropriate for the Muslim families who also lost loved ones on 9/11.

  1. My argument for this (taken from a friend who took it from someone else): how many ground zeroes have we created near mosques since 2001?

      Interesting point.

Unfortunately there are a lot of loud, bigoted people in America who still can’t separate the peaceful Muslims – who just want the same freedom of religion as everyone else – and the extremists who hate us. Should we hate all Christians for the murderous acts of a select few fundamentalists? How about all Jews for the bombings in Pakistan or all Germans for the Holocaust during World War II? I’d like to think most people can see through the B.S. and realize that not everyone in America thinks like Bill O’Reilly.

Nevertheless, there will always be those dangerous few (extremists) happy for any reason to attack us and making ignorant statements like, “Muslims killed us on 9/11” certainly doesn’t do the rest of us any favors. Why the media offers people like that a soapbox is beyond me.

If Rev. Terry Jones was putting our military in danger by spouting anti-Muslim hatred, what is Bill O’Reilly and people like him doing?

I thought it was the epitome of ignorance when Behar and GOLDBERG walked off the show on 7/14/2010. Yes, O’Reilly did make some imflamatory remarks, but, he was a guest, and should have been treated like a guest. You just don’t react like they did, even if they were not in agreement. I have seen both of them make some imflamatory remarks in the past, but I did not walk out ( shut off the TV ) Grow up—both of you. Your intolerance is one of the sociial ills that are so prevelant today with the left wing.

I’m certainly not a fan of Goldberg or Behar nor do I think walking of the set ultimately served much of a purpose. Ignorance, however, it was not. Ignorance is shouting over another person, telling them to shut up or stop talking because they “might learn something.” Ignorance is making a ridiculous remark like “Muslims killed us on 9/11.”

Bill O’Reilly is a self-important blow-hard. I blame him for the ignorant things he says, but more so those, such as The View and Fox News, who give him the forum to say it.
